Angela, thanks!

Indeed, our opinions converge on most matters. My biggest (and other enviros as well) dilemma is how to we deal with out societal problems and climate change when scientists tell us we have mere few years to turn the tide around? How do we reduce emissions by 40% below 1990 levels in MERE TEN YEARS? Surely we can't do it by going about it as business as usual with token gestures.

I don't know what the answer is, and there are probably many, which need to be employed in concert. But the urgency of the issue is truly devastating

Your carbon footprint is admirable, and probably lower than mine. I admire your perseverance and genuine interest in doing your part

I appreciate the input and will keep it in mind in the future. Right now my focus has shifted towards more food security, sustainability, climate change and keeping our minicipal governments accountable. Cheers!

Suggest you talk with Metro Vancouver, was GVRD, regarding coordinating projects on environmental clean up. They actually run some very good programs in regional parks and would welcome your input. I've worked with them a few years ago on behalf of my astronomy club. We continue to facilitate programs with them by bringing out our telescopes and knowledgeable volunteers. \ne.g. March 13th, 2010 at Aldergrove Lake Regional Park.\n\nhttp://www.metrovancouver.org/region/calendar/Lists/Calendar/DispForm.aspx?ID=872

Hi Peter:\nI actually agree with a lot you express on this website. I fought hard for Save Our Rivers by spreading the word. I continue to investigate the BC Cancer Research establishment vis a vis environmental toxin research leading to removal of these to prevent cancer and the effects of environmental estrogen on both men and women. \nI will still argue for people to use their cars to get around in because I know many who must do so and I will defend their right and mine until we have door to door transit, robots to carry our stuff, and no rain, snow, cold or baking hot weather! I'm a 30 year member of the Billy Bishop Legion, joined when I was a teenager :) \nI happen to live in a more sustainable way than most; using far less water, little heating fuel, no hydro (solar panel), and drive less than 7,000 km a year. I live in a motor home on the ways and byways of our province. \n\nCheers, Angela

This is another letter to the editor in the local newspapers in regards to the Tree Bylaw. Following my original article here - http://www.deepershadeofgreen.com/2009-01-27/tree-bylaw-sustainability/ - some people took offense to my viewpoint and called me a 'modern day druid' and a radical.

This, is my rebutal

It is with interest that I read this piece. I often wonder, what goes on in the minds of people running for the current Harper government. And I have come to two conclusions: they are either incredibly naive, or incredibly opportunistic. Either way, they're not the kind of people I want to represent me.

One does not have to dig deep to see how the current Harper's government is eroding our democracy and environment. There are too many examples to mention. I find it particularly disgusting to hear anyone working for Harper exclaiming just how much they want to preserve this planet for future generations.

Nothing could be further from the truth. The world over now sees us as environmental pariah. Whenever we meet with the world - like we did two weeks ago in Poland - to discuss seriously how to curb our emissions, Canadian envoy - usually the environmental minister of the day (we had 3 in past 3 years - got to wonder) continously won't commit to any targets, and in fact they offer nothing but excuses as to why Canada cannot reduce its emissions. Harper is too cozy with big oil and corporations, favouring the status quo rather then becoming leader in renewable energy and technology.

We are standing at a treshold in history. We have great opportunity. As Canadians, we have proven in the past that we can become leaders in many fields. Why not the environmental field? The US, with its new government taking place in January, is already quickly working on plans to address the economical crisis, and also the environmental one, for they believe they are one and can be solved by greening America. What are we waiting for? Want to make a diference in this world? Then start playing nice with the rest of the world. And start addressing the important issues. Don't walk away from them. Don't throw us lies and empty promises.

I find it often amusing speaking to James Moore on the issues of the environment, GMO or the like. All I ever hear from him is about the great initiatives the current government is undertaking to solve our crisis. Most of it relies on faulty science, blatant lies and unproven technology. Our very short discussion often ends with James saying we'll just have to agree to disagree. I feel trully represented in Ottawa. As I am sure do the 80% of Canadians wanting real action on the environment and climate change.

Runing for government or senate under Harper is a a disgrace. I am counting the days when we get either another party or a coalition that will introduce proportional representation, so we can put an end to this power mongering and egomaniacal 'ldeadership' of select few. Then people will also actually feel like voting, because they won't feel like they're wasting their vote.

This is extremely encouraging. Finally politicians that 'get it'. Andrea Reimer is an incredible and extremely capable woman - a powerhouse - and I know she will do her best to address the challenges of peak oil and climate change.

The repercussions are great. Neighboring cities often look to Vancouver as an example. if Vancouver is bold enough to put forth an initiative and prove it works, at least some other mayors often follow suit.

I would love to see other cities start discussing these issues more seriously. All I ever hear at the city hall is 'we'll green this city, we'll plant more trees' or some other rubbish. Next to no one is addressing the real challenges.

I encourage all of you to attend council meetings and challenge the council. Let them know that environment and sustainability does not go against economy. Let them know that in fact economy depends on healthy environment.

You've got to love Paul Watson. He does not mince words with criminals, such as Jim Winter, a founder of the Canadian Sealers Association or Loyola Hearn, minister of Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

Loyola Hearn is a twit that has no place in Canadian politics and I am counting the days till he gets booted out.
