Luka, I am your father!

At 7:38pm on March 17th, I became father to a gorgeous little boy named Luka (3.31Kg [7lbs & 5 oz] and around 51cm [20.5inches]).
The labour was a very long one; lasting almost 29 hours from the first real contraction, and 42 hours since Andrea’s water broke. Although we aimed for a home birth, after 17 hours of active labour at home, and no further progress, we had to go to the hospital (with our doula, two midwives, Andrea’s Mom and cousin). There, after 5 hours of agonizing pain, Andrea finally got her epidural (twice, since the first one was ineffective) and finally from then on, labour was actually almost enjoyable for Andrea. At 7pm on March 17th, Andrea was finally ready to start pushing our baby out, and it took mere 38 minutes for our baby boy to see the light of day. While pushing, Andrea was very relaxed, even laughing at jokes. The whole experience after Andrea got her medication was one of celebration of new life…I could not have imagined a better party. I was totally relaxed, with my only preoccupation the well being of my dear wife. Finally at 7:38pm, I caught my boy as he came to this world and I let my emotion run its course…I was simply overwhelmed with joy at being a father to a healthy and beautiful baby boy.
Incidentally, Luka, to the greatest delight of his father, was born on Saint Patric’s Day (never mind the fact that this year, church authorities exceptionally moved it to March 14th due to conflicting Holy Week). Thus our baby boy is a green baby, sure to follow in its father’s footsteps!
We are now back home, and baby and Mom are recuperating. Dad is learning the ropes of being a father, a role he enjoys immensely!
