Deeper Shade of Green

I’ll be adding any day now ‘fatherhood’ to my growing portfolio. Many has asked me how I feel and that perhaps I focus to much on my environmental activism and not enough on becoming a father.

Time to set the record straight

I am ecstatic about the prospect of being a father. Sure, I am scared as well, but I have worked on my fears and I have eliminated most of them. I realized there’s no point worrying, since the events about to come are out of my control. So I am calm. That doesn’t mean I don’t care or am not happy.

Every person reacts very differently when big things are about to happen to them and they know it’s coming. I have held my emotions back, in check. I think that is my way of dealing with the overwhelming rush of emotions that are sure to come with the birth of my child. However I very much look forward to what is coming.

So how do I tie my fervent passion for the environment with my impending fatherhood? I am devoting a lot of my free time to environmental activism. It feels so good walking the walk and not just talking the talk. I also get to stick it to the man, in a democratic way, at a time when we are slowly loosing democracy, especially in Gordon Campbell’s BC. With the birth of my child, my passion and devotion is sure to reach a new height, because now I will have not only the splendid nature around me, in my beautiful BC, to remind me what we stand to loose and why I fight, but also the future of my child.

Oh! I so look forward to teaching my child the wonders of the nature, the secrets she holds, the bond we all have with her (but many have forgotten). I will strive to be a patient and good teacher. I look forward to our hikes, the curiosity my child is sure to elicit, the many questions I will have to answer, the time spent together… I look forward to showing my child how to take everything around him / her into account. That every action has repercussions. That we need to tread lightly on this planet, for our Mother Nature is ill and we must help her get better.

I look forward to enjoying the simple things in life. Less of everything, more of love. Sharing with my child more of the free stuff in the world – the stuff that truly matters, in a world that can be so beautiful – right here, in BC, best place on Earth.
