Bottled water: Love it or Hate it?

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Around the world, factories are using more than 18 million barrels of oil and up to 130 billion gallons of fresh water a year to create something that, by and large, most people don’t need. But the product is so amazingly popular that sales are going up 10 percent a year, just like clockwork.

The big success story? Bottled water. And the resources mentioned above are just to make the plastic containers.

USDA Waters Down Organic Standards

Organic food is organically grown, except when it isn’t. Confused? So are we. (Man, are we ever.) The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) greenlighted a proposal late last Friday allowing 38 new non-organic ingredients in products bearing the “USDA Organic” seal, despite more than 10,000 e-mails and letters from concerned consumers and farmers, according to the Organic Consumer’s Association.

San Francisco: First plastic bags, now bottled water is under fire

And for good reason. Thirsty San Francisco city workers will no longer have bottled water to drink under an order by Mayor Gavin Newsom, who says it costs too much, worsens pollution and is no better than tap water.

Kayaking in the Gulf Islands, BC

Hello my fellow readers,

my apologies for not posting at my regular pace; I have been on vacation with my lovely wife kayaking and camping in the Gulf Islands, BC, near Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. The trip was quite nice, however the weather did not cooperate at all, which partly ruined the trip. One also had to be careful going sea kayaking since the weather can change quickly, and the tides and currents and waves when it’s windy can be hazardous to kayakers. We were quite well prepared, and so nothing major befell upon us. We are hoping to make many more memorable trips in the future. The highlight must have been to see tons of curious seals surrounding our kayaks and following us everywhere.
