Bali: People Power Confronts Climate Change

This December, the United Nations met with 190 countries to start working on a new framework on Climate Change when the current Kyoto protocol expires in 2012. The work that led to this historical meeting, the rallies that happened across the world on December 8th and the work done at the meeting in Bali was astounding.

There is much that happened in 2007 that lead to the talks in Bali. There’s also much high-profile drama that happened during Bali. Certain countries, amongst which was a coalition of Japan, Canada and the US went to Bali with clear instructions to derail the talks. That’s when people all across the world stood up and said enough is enough. The leading organization helping to channel people’s frustration and message of urgency on action on Climate Change has got to be Avaaz.

This organization is simply incredible and the work they do and how they engage people from all around the world in a lighting speed is mind boggling (Over 300,000 Avaaz members mobilize in 72 hours). I am proud to say I participate in most of their campaigns. To see so many others around the world joining voices to form a single message rekindles a glimmer of hope in me in humanity.

Please take a moment to read the timeline of what events lead to Bali and what happened during Bali. It makes for an incredible read.
