As if we didn’t have enough battles to fight as activists, environmentalists and even concerned citizens, here’s a new one to add to the list:
The Skeena watershed (northern BC) is internationally recognized for its abundance of salmon, wildlife and sheer natural beauty. The watershed provides habitat for a variety of threatened and endangered wildlife and supports a wild salmon economy that generates over $110 million dollars annually. The Skeena River has sustained First Nation’s cultures for over 10,000 years. In the last century, the watershed has become home for an extended network of communities who all share a unique lifestyle, supported by its abundant resources.
The Skeena region is under increasing development pressure from gas and oil projects that are remote in nature, energy intense and potentially debilitating to the watershedÍs globally significant ecological and cultural heritage resources. Notably, Shell continues to threaten the Sacred Headwaters with its destructive coalbed methane project
Many people are working to defend the Skeena region. Amongst the more famous ones are David Suzuki and Wade Davis, Author and Explorer in Residence at the National Geographic Society, who called the Skeena region one of the most beautiful places in the world.
You be the judge (see photos here) and decide if it is worth a little time on your part to help raise a unified voice against exploration in this beautiful area
