Follow up: British Columbians save electricity by turning it off

VANCOUVER – By turning off or unplugging unnecessary lights and appliances, British Columbians were able to save a significant amount of energy during “Turn it Off ” Day.

On May 16th, during the peak hours between 7 and 10 p.m. on May 16th, BC Hydro recorded a savings of 70 megawatts or the equivalent of 1.2 million incandescent light bulbs being turned off for the entire evening. If British Columbians continued to turn off unnecessary lights and appliances during those hours, the savings would provide enough electricity to power 8,000 homes for an entire year.

More than 150 businesses and 10 B.C. landmarks participated in the event to promote awareness of energy conservation. Individuals were encouraged to think about their energy use and make an effort to reduce energy consumption throughout the day.

“Turn it Off” Day was sponsored by BC Hydro under the 30 Days of Sustainability program, an annual celebration to promote sustainable living in Western Canada.
