Living Plastic Free?

Altlhough very hard, apparently it is near possible. I know some of you have asked the same question before and I have been wondering myself how to reduce my plastic usage. After all, the first R of the 3R’s is REDUCE. I always feel so damn guilty when I buy some food or something else and it is wrapped in plastic.

I found the following blog on Treehugger. It is the blog of one courageous woman to live completely plastic free for a year. It is indeed an interesting read and I encourage you to have a peek. I know I definitely will, in order to learn a thing or two on how to reduce my plastic usage!

Good morning…I was just reading an article from our local newspaper and viola…what do I see…an article stating The Town of Leaf Rapids in northern Manitoba says as of April 2 plastic shopping bags will be banned…first in Canada!!! They are implenting a by-law that will prohibit retailers from giving away or selling plastic shopping bags intended for single use. The concept is sponsered by a firm call In Store Products Ltd. which has reusable bag products but strongly encourages people to “Bring Your Own Bag”. Progress is happening. In Caledon we have all received new composting buckets both for kitchen and curb-side, along with sample, decomposable liner bags; however, we shall be using the local “rag (newspaper)” as liners (perfectly acceptable). We have been advised that acceptable paper products are Bag to Earth and Bin Fresh; acceptable certified compostable plastic liner products include AL-PACK compost bags, BioBag, BIOSAK compostable brown bags and Great Value Compostable Kitchen Bags. Those are my tips for today. Have a good one.

We are researching non-toxic/chemical free products for our garden this year…this should make quite a difference…given the size of our garden and plants…will keep you posted.

While Van and I have been out for our daily walks we have noticed a lot of “trash” throughout the walkways we travel as well as on the front of our properties. We think this is happening because the wind blows the “stuff” from our recycle bins out onto the street; solution, put the light articles at the bottom of the bin and the heavy articles on top. Simple eh!!! We will be taking recycle bags with us tomorrow and picking up the trash during our walk. It is really amazing how what we are doing is being noticed by other people (which we were not aware of). The other day we were coming back from our walk with our groceries (in our cotton bags) and our neighbour (who was driving out of her driveway) stopped to say how impressed she was that we had walked into town and back for our groceries (yes, she noticed our cotton bags). This really blew us away that she would even notice. For those of you that don’t know us, it is about 1 hour’s walk (return trip) into town and back. Not only do we feel healthier for doing this but we feel really good about it. Sue is 57 (fast approaching 58) and Van is 67 (fast approaching 68)…see, it is never too late to teach “an old dog” (or in our case…an old dog and an old bitch) new tricks!!!!!! Hope you like the humour!!!! Anyway, we are looking forward to our walk and clean-up tomorrow. Have a good week.
